Resources: hippoRENT v5: Deedable Prim Counter
If you want to count individual tenant prims on a piece of group-deeded land, you’ll need to use the free hippoRENT Networked Prim Counter v5.0 that ships with hippoRENT v5. You can network it to one or more rental boxes, deed it to the group that owns the land, and enjoy more reliable prim counting.
To use the hippoRENT Networked Prim Counter, follow these simple steps.
- Begin by configuring your rental box to count prims as you would normally (e.g. use PRIM COUNTS: Tenant in its Configuration Notecard, or turn on tenant prim counting using the pick list on the web-enabled box configuration page, like this:

- Rez the Networked Prim Counter, right click it and choose “Edit” (and then “More>>>” if only the mini-build window appears). Then go to the Content tab.
- Double-click the _config notecard to edit it.

- Change the settings in the notecard. From top to bottom these are ...
HIPPORENT NETWORK CHANNEL
A channel number for the counter to talk to your box. Make it a nice, low number; e.g.
HIPPORENT NETWORK CHANNEL: -4000
HIPPORENT NETWORK PASSPHRASE
A passphrase that is used to encrypt communications beween the counter and the box; e.g.
HIPPORENT NETWORK PASSPHRASE: topsecretmessage
RENTAL BOX OWNER KEY
This needs to be your Second Life avatar key; the counter will have chatted it when you rezzed it (so copy it from chat history); e.g. RENTAL BOX OWNER KEY: 7e9fd382-7f9b-4ea4-8cb8-4228767b04bb
(We need this so the counter knows about you once you deed it to the group)
FLASH WHEN COUNTING
If you want the counter to flash when it’s busy counting, use FLASH WHEN COUNTING: Yes
OTHER MANAGERS
A list of names, separated by commas, of other people who you want to be able to touch the prim counter and get a prim count; e.g. OTHER MANAGERS: Ian Credible, Joe Normous
RESTRICT TO PARCEL: <Yes/No>
e.g. RESTRICT TO PARCEL: Yes
When counting all or group prims, if you set this to 'No' then the unit will try and count all/group prims on all land in the sim owned by the group to which it is deeded. Please note that individual prim counts can only be returned for one parcel at a time, it's only all or group prims for which sim wide counts can be returned.
- Close the notecard and save it; the Prim Counter will reload the settings you put in it.
- Next, open up the rental box as you did the counter in step 1 and add the PLUGIN_prim_counter script from your inventory to the contents of a rental box you wish to connect to this counter.
- Double click this script and edit it. Ensure that the prim_counter_channel matches the HIPPORENT NETWORK CHANNEL setting and the passphrase value matches the HIPPORENT NETWORK PASSPHRASE from step 4. And ensure that the “Running” tickbox is ticked at the bottom left of the script window. So, for example ...

- Close the script and save it. If everything has been correctly, the PLUGIN script will chat readiness to you:
hippoRENT Rental Box whispers: Prim counter plugin loaded and running ok.
- Then click the rental box and reset it.
- Finally edit the Networked Prim Counter and share it with then deed it to the group the land parcel it’s on is deeded to.

- If you’ve done everything correctly, whenever the rental box needs prim data, it will contact the Prim Counter to provide this. The Prim Counter can provide prim data to any rental box anywhere in the same sim, provided the rental box requesting data is on land deeded to the same group as the Prim Counter. (Important note: Second Life counts all land deeded to the same group in the same sim as effectively the "same" parcel -> so using the Prim Counter to count ALL or GROUP prims if you've multiple bits of group land will return the cumulative total for all group land you own in the sim ... (the figure shown at the top of the "About Land" window within Second Life).
- You (or any OTHER MANAGERS specified in step 4) can click the Prim Counter itself at any time to get a count of all prims and group-owned prims on the parcel. (You won’t be told individual tenant prims, since a Prim Counter does not hold tenant data that is held in a rental box and only sent to a Prim Counter when a count is requested. Instead, click your rental box, choose “Voice Cmd” and type prim counts.
